Film vs Digital : Side by Side Images

I got asked the question yesterday what is the difference in film vs digital. Outside of the experience and the process which to me is much slower, deliberate, and “organic” with shooting film and less work on the back end in terms of processing , there is definitely a difference in the look of the final image.

Here are some side by side examples of digital vs film images from my recent shoot with Ashley. Where ever possible I tried to get two images that were as close as possible in terms of  lighting and the pose, and while they are not one to one matches it gives a good sense of the difference. All film shots are on the right or below and were shot with Kodak Portra 400 exposed at 320 and done with the 35mm F100. Also most side by side comparisons were shot with the same lens.

The first major difference is in color between the two images, I also  think the film pictures look more ethereal yet more real (I know that may be a contradiction). To me the film just seems more tactile and real and the digital almost too perfect.

At the end of the day I don’t think one is better than the other but just a matter of taste in terms of aesthetic.
